Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 Announced as Two Beloved Cast Members Say Goodbye
ABC has officially renewed its entire Thursday lineup for the upcoming season, including a notable renewal for Grey’s Anatomy, extending the beloved series into its 23rd season. This renewal solidifies the show’s status as the longest-running primetime medical drama on television, a record that continues to grow under the creative vision of Shonda Rhimes.
Producing studio 20th Television is expected to finalize casting decisions for the upcoming season by the end of June. Recent reports suggest that several key cast members, including Chandra Wilson (Bailey), James Pickens Jr. (Richard), Camilla Luddington (Jo), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia), and Chris Carmack (Link), are likely to return as they are believed to be under contract for another year. Historically, Grey’s Anatomy has maintained its core cast, not departing with more than two high-profile actors at a time.
Despite no longer dominating linear viewership as it once did, Grey’s Anatomy continues to thrive with a robust streaming audience that transcends generations. According to Disney estimates, the series concluded last year as the #1 most-streamed show globally on Disney+ and Hulu and secured the #2 position in the U.S. among Hulu and Netflix offerings, as reported by Nielsen.
Ellen Pompeo, the show’s titular star, remains involved as a narrator while also appearing in a recurring capacity. The series is produced by Rhimes and Betsy Beers from Shondaland, alongside current showrunner Meg Marinis and director Debbie Allen, who is also a recurring cast member.
With this renewal, Grey’s Anatomy joins other ABC Thursday night dramas, including 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville, both of which have also received green lights for the upcoming season, along with High Potential and Abbott Elementary.
