Gorillaz made their debut on Studio 8H as the musical guest on the March 7 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Ryan Gosling.
The animated band, led by Damon Albarn, performed in support of their latest album, The Mountain, released on February 27. The album has already achieved significant success, debuting at No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart, marking the band’s third chart-topping album in the country.
Gorillaz kicked off their performance with “Clint Eastwood,” the iconic single from their 2001 self-titled debut. Accompanied by a massive screen that displayed animated versions of the band members, they were joined onstage by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien to deliver his verses.
In their second performance, the group showcased “The Moon Cave,” featuring appearances by singer-songwriter Asha Puthli, The Roots’ Black Thought, and sitar player Anoushka Shankar. The lively rendition was enriched by a vibrant string section in the background.
Recently, Gorillaz announced their first North American tour in four years, set to begin on September 17 in Orlando, Florida, and conclude on Halloween in Seattle. The Mountain serves as a follow-up to 2023’s Cracker Island.
Earlier in the episode, Harry Styles made a surprise appearance during Gosling’s opening monologue, causing excitement among the studio audience. The actor cleverly incorporated the moment into his routine, humorously expressing concern that Styles was overshadowing his prepared dialogue.
