Glenn Close reminisced about a surprising dinner with Robert Redford during a recent episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast, Wiser Than Me. The 78-year-old actress recounted her experience with Redford, revealing that she did not realize the dinner was intended as a date.
Reflecting on the occasion, Close stated that Redford invited her to “a very romantic restaurant” after they starred together in The Natural in 1984. “I was too clueless and unknowing and unsure to even consider that I might have dated him,” she shared.
Louis-Dreyfus responded with astonishment, exclaiming, “Oh. My. God.”

Close expressed her surprise at not recognizing the romantic nature of the invitation, noting that Redford later married Sibylle Szaggars in 2009. “I didn’t know,” she reflected. Louis-Dreyfus quipped, “But lucky you, you got to work with him.”
“Yeah,” Close agreed. “But how dorky was that?”
In the same podcast episode, Close described herself as “such a dork” at age 21 when asked what advice she would give her younger self. “Pull yourself together,” she joked. “Get an education!”
Redford, who passed away on September 16 at the age of 89, starred alongside Close in The Natural, a film also featuring Robert Duvall and Kim Basinger. Earlier this year, Close named Redford as her “best onscreen kiss” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
“I only got to kiss him once… maybe we did two takes,” she recounted. “But I ended up with him.”
Close’s interview with Louis-Dreyfus also touched on her iconic roles, the guest house she has built for her later years, and her newfound role as a grandmother with the arrival of her daughter Annie Starke’s son, Rory.
Currently, Close is involved in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which is in select theaters and streaming on Netflix. She also stars in Ryan Murphy’s Hulu drama All’s Fair, and she is set to appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.
