Giannis Shines as Bucks Edge Out Lakers 105-101 with Last-Minute Defensive Plays
Milwaukee Bucks Edge Los Angeles Lakers with Late Defensive Stands
In a thrilling finish, Giannis Antetokounmpo made critical defensive plays in the final minute, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 105-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The game, held on Friday night, showcased Antetokounmpo’s defensive prowess as he blocked a shot from LeBron James and then stole the ball from him during consecutive possessions.
Kevin Porter Jr. played a pivotal role in the Bucks’ victory, scoring 22 points. He broke a tie with two free throws following Antetokounmpo’s block of James’s layup attempt with just 39 seconds remaining.
Antetokounmpo’s defensive efforts did not stop there; with only 2 seconds left on the clock, he knocked the ball from James’s hands, ensuring the Bucks’ fifth win in seven games and marking their first victory against a team with a winning record since December 11. Despite this strong performance, Antetokounmpo registered 21 points, his lowest since returning from a calf injury.
Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 24 points and nine assists, although he struggled with his shooting, hitting only 8 of 25 attempts. This marked his lowest-scoring game since Christmas. James contributed significantly with 26 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds, but the Lakers fell short as they have lost six of their last ten games.
The Bucks initially built a comfortable double-digit lead in the first half, even as Antetokounmpo was on a minutes restriction. Doncic’s efforts in the third quarter included 12 points, although he faced foul trouble, committing five fouls during the game.
The Lakers made a strong push in the fourth quarter, launching a 17-4 run that allowed them to take the lead. James capped this run by stealing the ball from Antetokounmpo and finishing with a layup with just over six minutes to play. However, after a rough shooting start to the quarter, Porter’s layup with two minutes remaining evened the score, setting the stage for the intense final moments.
Injuries affected the Lakers’ depth, with starters Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura sidelined. Hachimura, who has missed six consecutive games due to a calf injury, may return early next week, according to coach JJ Redick.
Looking ahead, the Bucks will face the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, while the Lakers will take on the Sacramento Kings on Monday.
