Game Creator Responds to Prime Video’s First Look, Calls Characters Uninspiring
David Jaffe, the creator of the acclaimed video game series God of War, has shared his candid thoughts on the recently released first-look image from Prime Video’s upcoming TV adaptation. In a seven-minute reaction video posted to his YouTube channel, Jaffe criticized the image as “so dumb” and “a terrible image.”
“I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard,” Jaffe remarked with a chuckle. Despite his harsh words about the image, he expressed confidence in the series’ direction, praising showrunner Ronald D. Moore as “awesome.” “I’m not worried about the show,” Jaffe stated. “But I’m a little worried about: What the fuck is this?”
Jaffe speculated that the show’s creative team might be prioritizing the father-son dynamic over traditional Warrior imagery. “Maybe they’re thinking, ‘What we really want to focus on is the father-son story.’ But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s [Ryan Hurst’s Kratos] shitting in the woods?” he questioned.
Although he admitted to not being particularly enthusiastic about the show, Jaffe listed several aspects he found “most offensive.” These included his perception that Kratos appeared “stupid” and his disapproval of how Atreus (Callum Vinson) looks with product in his hair. “It’s just weird—the way the whole image looks,” he commented, adding that Atreus resembled “a very confused little boy with way too much product in his hair.”
Jaffe concluded his critique by asserting that none of the characters appear interesting or appealing, stating, “They just look dumb. Like if this was God of War: Dumb and Dumber edition.”
The live-action adaptation, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, has already been ordered for two seasons. The narrative centers on a father and son as they embark on a quest to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, while navigating the complexities of their roles as Kratos seeks to teach his son how to be a better god and Atreus aims to help his father evolve into a better human.
