Galaxy Faces Continued Challenges in Disappointing Loss to Minnesota
Galaxy Suffer 2-1 Loss to Minnesota United, Extend Winless Streak to Four Games
The LA Galaxy’s struggles continued on Saturday as they faced Minnesota United, resulting in a 2-1 defeat that marked the team’s fourth consecutive winless match in league play. Defensive errors significantly contributed to this latest setback, leaving the Galaxy to grapple with their diminishing season.
The Galaxy dominated much of the first half but struggled with indecision in front of goal. They managed to outshoot Minnesota 6-2 during the opening period but failed to convert several promising opportunities, particularly in the early minutes of the second half. A critical moment came when Gabriel Pec maneuvered skillfully into the box, only to misplace a pass intended for Marco Reus, allowing Minnesota to regroup.
Less than a minute after that missed chance, Minnesota’s Anthony Markanich capitalized on a defensive lapse, racing past Galaxy defender Mauricio Cuevas to score from a long ball delivered by Joaquín Pereyra. Despite the Galaxy’s appeals for an offside call, the goal was validated.
The Galaxy managed to equalize shortly afterward when Reus executed a precise right-footed shot on goal, which was parried by Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender. Reus then converted the rebound with a left-footed effort, bringing the score to 1-1.
However, the match’s turning point came in the 67th minute, when Kelvin Yeboah exploited another defensive misplay to slot a pass from Tomás Chancalay into the net, securing Minnesota’s lead once more. Following that goal, Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was seen gesturing to his defenders, attempting to rally his team in the wake of the setback.
In the final minutes of the match, the Galaxy pressed for an equalizer, with several opportunities arising from rebounds within the six-yard box. During stoppage time, Callender recorded a season-best sixth save by deflecting a shot from Pec, but the Galaxy’s efforts ultimately fell short. As the match concluded, a crowd of 22,447 expressed their frustration, with chants of “We Want Better” echoing from the Victoria Block.
Both teams were hindered by key absences. The Galaxy was without winger Joseph Paintsil, sidelined due to a hamstring injury, and defender Jakob Glesnes, who is coping with a calf strain. Minnesota was missing midfielder Julian Gressel, who is recovering from a toe injury, as well as captain James Rodríguez, who was hospitalized for severe dehydration after an international friendly.
Looking ahead, the Galaxy faces a challenging road as they prepare for a CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal against Toluca in Mexico on Wednesday. This match marks the beginning of a grueling stretch as the team is set to play six games within the next 21 days.
