Friend of John F. Kennedy Jr. Clarifies the Relationship Between Carolyn Bessette and Caroline Kennedy at the 1996 Wedding
John F. Kennedy Jr.’s childhood friend Sasha Chermayeff recently reflected on attending his wedding to Carolyn Bessette in 1996. Chermayeff noted that, contrary to the portrayal in Ryan Murphy’s Hulu series Love Story, there was no tension between Carolyn and JFK Jr.’s sister, Caroline Kennedy, during the intimate ceremony.
The latest episode of Love Story, titled "The Wedding," dramatizes the romance between JFK Jr. and Bessette-Kennedy, showcasing rising tensions between the two women. However, Chermayeff stated, “At [the wedding], there wasn’t a feeling of tension at all. It was just not there.” She acknowledged that while some knew of existing tensions, they were not evident during the event.
In the episode, Caroline Kennedy struggles to accept Carolyn’s wishes for a private wedding, leading to a series of misunderstandings. The show depicts Caroline’s disapproval and her reluctance to assist Carolyn, suggesting a strained relationship in the lead-up to the wedding. Chermayeff contests this depiction, asserting, “I’m not convinced that [Caroline] had to do anything like that. I think Carolyn had her people pretty much with her.” She suggested that Carolyn’s mother and sisters were likely responsible for assisting her on that day.
Chermayeff expressed skepticism about the show’s authenticity, stating, "The way I look at it, [‘Love Story’] is just being made by a group of people that never met them, didn’t know them, and are just making it up as they go along."
Her comments come in the wake of criticism from actress Daryl Hannah, who also condemned the series for its "untrue" representation of real people and events, specifically regarding her portrayal in the show. Hannah stated, "The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct, or my relationship with John."
Chermayeff’s insights remind viewers that Love Story is ultimately a fictional interpretation, one that may diverge significantly from the reality of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s lives.
