Flyers Secure Overtime Win Against the Ducks
Flyers Edge Ducks in Overtime Thriller
In a gripping overtime showdown on Wednesday night, Noah Cates scored a game-winning goal at 2:17, deflecting a shot off goalie Lukas Dostal’s skate after a brief review for offsides. The Philadelphia Flyers triumphed over the Anaheim Ducks, clinching a 3-2 victory.
The Ducks, leading the Pacific Division, pushed the game into overtime with a late goal from Leo Carlsson, who found the net with just 1:54 remaining in regulation.
Flyers goalie Dan Vladar was instrumental in the win, making 34 saves. The victory marked a significant rebound for Philadelphia after a narrow 2-1 shootout loss to Columbus on Saturday. Currently, the Flyers trail Boston and Detroit by six points in the race for two Eastern Conference wild-card spots.
Luke Glendening opened the scoring for Philadelphia with his first goal of the season, while Owen Tippett also contributed a goal. Notably, Trevor Zegras went scoreless in his first game back in Anaheim since his offseason trade; he had previously netted two goals against the Ducks in a January matchup.
For the Ducks, Cutter Gauthier scored and Dostal recorded 24 saves. Anaheim concluded a recent Canadian swing with a 4-3 win over Montreal on Sunday, finishing the trip with a split record of 2-2.
Compounding the Ducks’ challenges, defenseman Radko Gudas continued serving a five-game suspension for kneeing Auston Matthews, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury sustained in a loss to Toronto on March 12.
Ducks defenseman John Carlson was back on the ice for his second consecutive game after being acquired from Washington, having missed earlier games due to a lower-body injury.
Glendening’s opening goal came at 2:50 of the first period, and Tippett’s success expanded the lead to 2-0 at 7:53 in the second. However, Gauthier narrowed the gap with a power-play goal just before the second intermission, marking his 35th goal of the season.
The tension heightened in the third period when Philadelphia’s Nick Seeler engaged in a fight with Jansen Harkins, adding to the evening’s intensity.
