Films Boutique Announces Initial Deals for Maltese Drama ‘Zejtune’ and Shares International Trailer
Films Boutique Secures International Deals for Alex Camilleri’s Zejtune
Films Boutique has announced its first international sales for Maltese-American director Alex Camilleri’s latest feature, Zejtune, which premiered in competition at the Goteborg Film Festival and saw its sales launch at the European Film Market (EFM) last month.
The film has been acquired by several distributors, including Épicentre in France, September Film in Benelux, Movies Inspired in Italy, Demiurg for the former Yugoslavia, and Anticipate Pictures in Singapore.
Zejtune marks Camilleri’s second feature following his acclaimed debut, Luzzu, which was selected for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and earned Jesmark Scicluna the Special Jury Award for acting.
The story follows Mar, portrayed by Michela Farrugia, who plans to leave her native Malta after the death of her estranged mother. She intends to use proceeds from the sale of inherited farmland to fund her departure.
During her journey across the island to claim her land, Mar encounters Nenu, played by Nenu Borg, an 80-year-old folk singer whose music and vibrant spirit compel her to reconsider her wish to escape. As their connection deepens, Mar begins to appreciate the homeland she initially wished to abandon. The cast also features Michael Azzopardi and Frida Cauchi.
Zejtune is produced by Oliver Mallia of Pellikola, Ramin Bahrani of Noruz Films, and Camilleri under his Solari Productions label, with co-producers Fred Burle, Sol Bondy of One Two Films, and Rebecca Anastasi.
A domestic premiere for the film is scheduled in Malta on April 8. Following the release of a teaser prior to its Goteborg premiere, Films Boutique has now launched the international trailer for the feature.
