Family of Dating App Murder Victim Gears Up to Confront Convicted Killer in Court
Family of Johnavah Granderson Prepares for Sentencing of His Killer
LOS ANGELES – The family of Johnavah Granderson is bracing to confront the man who took his life during a court sentencing. Granderson, a 25-year-old affectionately known as "Duga," was killed on July 19, 2021, after being ambushed by a group of gang members during a meeting arranged through a dating app.
As the family reflects on their profound loss, they are determined to seek justice for Granderson. His mother, Nicole Hall, described the harrowing impact of her son’s death, stating, "I was literally out of my mind for almost four years, you know, and it woke up a lot of sickness that I didn’t have. Now I’m trying to be an advocate and get out and help other mothers that’s going through the same things that I went through."
Duga’s sister, Janaeja Bonton, shared her feelings as the sentencing approaches, expressing a sentiment of closure. "This is like a victory lap for me. [The convicted murderer] is going to deal with that for the rest of his life every single day," she remarked.
According to reports, Granderson was the fourth victim targeted by the same gang members, with previous survivors detailing their experiences in court. Notably, one other victim—a transgender woman—has relocated out of California following her ordeal. All the victims were lured via dating applications, highlighting the risks associated with online interactions.
The upcoming court proceedings serve not only as a moment for justice but also as a painful reminder of the ongoing effects of violence in communities.
