Exploring the Turtleboy Blogger’s Connection to the Karen Read Murder Case Through Insightful Docuseries and Features
Compelling Pictures Acquires Rights to Aidan ‘Turtleboy’ Kearney’s Story
Compelling Pictures, the production firm behind TriStar’s Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, has secured exclusive rights to depict the complex narrative of Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney. Kearney is a pivotal figure in the highly publicized murder mystery involving Karen Read, who faced trial twice for the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
Read was accused and acquitted of fatally striking O’Keefe with her vehicle in Canton, Massachusetts, in January 2022. Though her case has gained significant media attention, including a Lifetime film and an HBO Max docuseries, Kearney’s perspective—shaped by his relentless pursuit of justice for Read—has remained largely untold. As a dedicated online journalist, Kearney has worked to expose what he believes are injustices perpetrated by local law enforcement.
Kearney, a former teacher and boys varsity track coach, gained notoriety through his blog, Turtleboy Sports. Initially focused on sports and local issues, the blog evolved into a platform for commentary on politics, crime, and perceived corruption within government and institutions.
His involvement in Read’s case began after he reported on allegations of misconduct by the Massachusetts State Police. Deeply influenced by the Commonwealth vs. Karen Read case, he became convinced of Read’s innocence and organized protests to rally public support on her behalf.
Read’s first trial concluded in 2024 with a hung jury. The following year, she was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter, though convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence, resulting in a sentence of one year of probation. Rachael Rollins, the former U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, commended Kearney’s advocacy on social media, noting that his reporting shed light on the case despite pushback from law enforcement.
Kearney’s unorthodox journalistic approach has not come without consequences. In 2023, he faced charges for witness tampering and conspiracy due to his participation in peaceful protests. After a brief period of release on bail, he was re-arrested amid allegations of assaulting a former girlfriend. Though some charges have been dismissed, he still faces ongoing legal challenges related to the Read trial.
Compelling Pictures plans to explore Kearney’s story through two distinct projects. A docuseries is currently in production, following Kearney and the growing Turtleboy community as they navigate the legal proceedings surrounding Read. Additionally, the company is in discussions for a feature film that aims to capture the gravity of the situation in the vein of iconic Boston films such as Spotlight, Manchester by the Sea, and Mystic River.
Producers Jeff Kalligheri and Denis O’Sullivan are leading both the documentary and feature film projects, with Steven Garcia also serving as executive producer. The team is keen to present Kearney’s unique perspective on the unfolding narrative.
Kalligheri explained the motivation behind the projects, stating, “This story hits close to home: My cousin Brian was John O’Keefe’s friend and former partner in the Boston Police Force. Having followed the case since soon after the tragic incident took place, our aim is to shine a light until the entire truth is shown. Aidan’s perspective on this American tragedy as a citizen and journalist allows the unique opportunity to see it from all angles. We are eager for the audience to follow that through-line to wherever the still emerging facts lead.”
Kearney expressed his commitment to the story, asserting, “Journalism is not a crime, at least it wasn’t until I began investigating and writing about the coverup of John O’Keefe’s murder and the subsequent framing of Karen Read. For 15 months the Commonwealth and the people responsible for John’s murder got away with what they were doing because it wasn’t getting much attention. That all changed after I started covering the story, which is why I had to be stopped. I look forward to providing new insight and details about my coverage of the case that has never been told before.”
Compelling Pictures, founded by industry veterans Kalligheri and O’Sullivan in 2019, debuted with the Whitney Houston biopic and is currently in post-production on The Collaboration, adapted from the popular Broadway play. They are also developing the upcoming romance Walk the Blue Fields, featuring Emily Blunt.
Compelling is represented by Jay Cohen and Evan Krauss of Eisner Law.
