Excitement Builds for the Orange Lutheran and St. John Bosco Baseball Showdown
Orange Lutheran Triumphs Over St. John Bosco in Thrilling Showdown
A dramatic sixth-inning home run by Brady Murrietta led the Orange Lutheran Lancers to a closely contested 5-4 victory against the St. John Bosco Braves on Thursday. Murrietta’s two-run blast broke a 3-3 tie, signaling a definitive comeback for the Lancers and effectively preventing a three-game sweep by the second-ranked Braves.
Tensions between the teams had been palpable, particularly after St. John Bosco pitcher Jack Champlin’s post-game taunt following a 4-1 victory the day prior. “I was hearing them all game at third base,” Champlin recounted. “I pointed to the ground and was saying, ‘This is my field.’ A bunch ran out of the dugout toward me and it got bigger than it needed to be.”
The excitement of Thursday’s game was amplified by the presence of security, which was heightened due to the intensity of the rivalries ongoing between the two teams. After the game, one security official even restricted access to the Orange Lutheran bullpen, prompting some comic relief amidst the chaos.
The pre-game handshake was noticeably absent as a precaution, even though mutual friendship existed among players. Orange Lutheran pitcher Gary Morse and St. John Bosco’s Julian Garcia have known each other since childhood; Morse had congratulated Garcia on his recent performance just hours earlier, while Murrietta planned to reach out to his friends on the Braves.
“It was more to get my boys hyped up,” Murrietta explained of his focused gaze aimed at Champlin after rounding the bases.
Wednesday’s match had showcased the talents of both teams’ aces, Morse and Garcia. Morse, standing at 6-foot-8, delivered an impressive performance with a fastball clocked at 95 mph, giving up just one run and striking out eight over six innings. Garcia, who recently returned from arm surgery, matched the intensity by hitting 97 mph and striking out ten batters. The Braves took the lead in a tight contest, scoring three runs in the seventh inning, thanks in part to a two-run single by James Clark.
In their previous game on Tuesday, Clark also had a standout performance, contributing two hits and three RBIs in St. John Bosco’s 7-4 victory.
Morse reflected on the competitive nature of this week’s games, stating, “Two best teams in the country.” With this recent victory, Orange Lutheran improved to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in league play, having previously clinched a championship at the National High School Invitational in North Carolina. They showcased not only Morse but also Cooper Sides, a senior transfer who struck out eight in Thursday’s match, drawing the attention of numerous pro scouts.
St. John Bosco coach Andy Rojo acknowledged his team’s resilience, remarking, “It continues what we already know—that it’s a tough team, a resilient team. We’ve had a lot of high-pressure, high-level games. A ton of one-run games.” Garcia echoed this sentiment, adding, “It pushed us to show we’re a great team.”
Looking ahead, both teams remain strong contenders with the potential for a rematch during next week’s Boras Classic in Orange County or in the upcoming Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, which will feature a new 16-team format leading to a best-of-three series. With exceptional pitching on both sides, fans can anticipate further thrilling encounters between these two powerhouse programs.
