Oscar Winner Shirley MacLaine to Star in Matthew Weiner’s Margret and Stevie
Oscar-winning actress Shirley MacLaine is set to lead the cast of Margret and Stevie, a film directed by Matthew Weiner and written by Stephanie Gillis.
The project draws inspiration from the life of Margret Rey, co-creator of the beloved Curious George character and books. It portrays Rey, played by MacLaine, in her later years as publishers aim to redefine her legacy and rewrite her place in literary history. As the pressure intensifies, Margret grapples with memories of the war she survived decades ago and the journey that brought her to America. Her path crosses with that of Stevie, who becomes an unexpected confidant, and their sharp-edged friendship revitalizes Margret’s determination to reclaim her narrative and authorship.
Rohm Feifer Entertainment and Latigo Films are financing and producing the project, with additional casting currently ongoing. This film marks Weiner’s second feature directorial venture, following the 2013 comedy Are You Here, which featured Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Poehler.
MacLaine boasts an impressive career with over 50 feature films, including a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Terms of Endearment in 1983. She has received six Oscar nominations overall, along with six Emmy nominations and seven Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement. Currently, she is filming Lucy Boomer with Ansel Elgort and has recently appeared in People Not Places and a season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Other notable recent credits include American Dreamer, Disney’s Noelle, The Last Word, and Wild Oats. MacLaine is represented by CAA.
Weiner, known for creating Mad Men, has recently ventured into playwriting with his premiere production John Wilkes Booth: One Night Only! at the Baltimore Center Stage. He served as executive producer on The Sopranos, and has written and directed the Prime Video series The Romanoffs. His debut novel, Heather, The Totality, was published by Little, Brown and Company. He is also represented by CAA and attorney Jeanne Newman.
Gillis, a Writer’s Guild and Peabody Award-winning screenwriter with two Emmy nominations for The Simpsons, based her script on her unique relationship with Margret Rey and the remarkable story of the Reys’ escape from France in 1940. She is represented by Gersh.
