Eric Dane’s Cause of Death Explained
The official cause of death for Eric Dane has been confirmed. The actor, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died from respiratory failure, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) listed as a contributing factor, according to his death certificate obtained by People.
Dane’s family announced that he passed away on February 19. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” they stated in a message to People. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis last April, expressing that he was still “able to continue working.” He later raised awareness about the disease in a guest appearance on Brilliant Minds, portraying a patient with ALS.
“I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening,” he shared on Good Morning America. “It’s not a dream. I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”
Dane’s career began with an onscreen debut in a 1991 episode of Saved by the Bell and included appearances on series such as The Wonder Years, Married… with Children, Roseanne, Charmed, and Las Vegas. His breakout role as Dr. Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy solidified his status in Hollywood, where he starred from 2006 to 2012.
In addition to his television work, Dane appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Marley & Me (2008), Burlesque (2010), Americana (2023), and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024).
