Thundercat, the celebrated bassist, has expressed his struggles with the constant influx of distressing news through his phone. He described the modern experience of life as feeling akin to being “cellphones at this point,” emphasizing the difficulty of navigating inspiration while processing overwhelming events around the world.
This tumultuous backdrop serves as the foundation for his latest album, “Distracted,” which marks his fifth release and first since 2017. Known for its rich musicality, the album features collaborations with artists such as ASAP Rocky, Tame Impala, and Lil Yachty, while also delivering poignant reflections in tracks like “What Is Left to Say” and “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time.” Notably, “She Knows Too Much” includes an emotional tribute to his late friend and collaborator, Mac Miller.
“After [Miller’s] death, there were a lot of questions, a lot of stones left unturned,” Thundercat stated. “But this song came to be from the simplicity of making music between friends. It’s a language, a snapshot. It was a beautiful moment between us.”
Born Stephen Bruner, Thundercat was deeply rooted in Los Angeles’s progressive jazz scene during his upbringing, collaborating with a diverse range of artists including Kendrick Lamar and Suicidal Tendencies. His artistic inspiration remains tied to the innovative spirit found within the city, allowing him to explore creative avenues amidst challenging times.
Thundercat’s daily routine reflects his multifaceted interests. At 9 a.m., he seeks out quality coffee at Commissary, a spot he relies on when reality feels overwhelming. He emphasizes the importance of time spent without his instrument. “The time between is just as important as the time spent with music,” he noted, highlighting his growth as a musician.
By noon, he reconnects with his love for comics, frequenting Golden Apple Comics on Melrose. “They’ve been one of the through lines in my life that has just been consistent,” he shared, reminiscing about the nurturing community there.
Later in the day, at 5 p.m., he enjoys visiting the AMC theaters at Universal CityWalk, despite the high ticket prices. Thundercat appreciates the vibrant atmosphere, enriched by various entertainment options surrounding the venue.
As evening falls, culinary delights await at Asanebo, his favorite sushi restaurant known for its dedicated staff and exquisite food. “It’s about the history for me, and the family that is built there,” he explained, emphasizing the warmth of the environment.
By 10 p.m., Thundercat prefers to unwind, often choosing to relax at home watching “Star Trek” over engaging in nightlife. However, he fondly recalls the multitude of gigs he played across Los Angeles, filled with lasting memories and friendships.
