Enjoying a Perfect Sunday in L.A. with Tips from Pete Yorn
Pete Yorn, an acclaimed singer-songwriter, reflects on his nearly 30-year journey in Los Angeles, a path that began on May 16, 1996, shortly after his graduation from Syracuse University. Despite his long tenure in the city, Yorn continues to proudly identify as a native of New Jersey. “I guess I identify very strongly with my upbringing,” he shared with a laugh.
Yorn’s debut album, “Musicforthemorningafter,” released in 2001, captures the essence of his transition to L.A., offering a window into the vibrant social scene that echoes the spirit of Doug Liman’s film “Swingers.” “But the driving around and the going to parties — it was all the same stuff,” he said, noting his family’s entrenched ties in the entertainment industry through his brothers, Kevin and Rick.
Now at 51, Yorn is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his debut album by performing it in full during his current tour. Alongside these classics, he plans to include tracks from his diverse career, such as a collaboration with Scarlett Johansson in 2009. His new album, “All the Beauty,” is scheduled for release on July 24. Yorn shares a glimpse into his family life in Los Angeles with his wife, jewelry designer Beth Kaltman, and their 10-year-old daughter.
On a typical Sunday, Yorn rises early, around 7 a.m., to maintain his routine of driving his daughter to school. He prefers to start his day with a familiar breakfast of either yogurt with frozen berries or blueberry overnight oats, a staple he even requests before his shows. “I’ll just have the Mush,” he laughs, describing his straightforward dining preferences.
Every Sunday, he dedicates time to activities with his daughter, who has developed a passion for horseback riding. Despite his nerves about her chosen sport, he remains supportive, noting, “She just loves it.” Sundays can also involve catching NFL games on his phone, a guilty pleasure for the devoted Raiders fan.
Midday might find the family at Iceland, an ice-skating rink in Van Nuys, or strolling through the Fashion Square mall in Sherman Oaks. Yorn appreciates the tangible experience of shopping, recalling trips to the mall during his youth in New Jersey.
In the afternoon, Yorn indulges in a treat from a local bakery, Schazti’s, where he enjoys a beloved chocolate banana pudding. When evening arrives, family meals often revolve around takeout from their favorite Asian restaurants, although Yorn is content with a simple bowl of cereal. Occasionally, he explores classic dining options like the iconic Smoke House in Burbank.
As the day winds down, Yorn values his time spent with family, especially driving his daughter to school. Early to bed to prepare for the next day, he often finds himself watching shows but nods off quickly. “It takes me quite a few nights to get through an episode,” he candidly admitted, cherishing the time spent at home before facing the demands of his career once again.
