Encino Community Responds to City’s Plan for RV Encampments Near Balboa Park
Homeless Crisis Intensifies in Encino Neighborhood
LOS ANGELES – Residents of Encino are voicing increasing concern regarding the city’s management of oversized vehicles and homeless encampments along Balboa Boulevard. The ongoing issue has become a point of contention among community members and local authorities.
Neighborhood groups have criticized recent cleanup initiatives, arguing that while these efforts may offer temporary relief, they do not address the underlying problem of homelessness in the area. “The temporary shuffle of RVs and encampments creates safety risks, as there is a lack of long-term enforcement," one resident stated.
Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Fire Department collaborated with local organizations to clear a significant area near the Balboa Sports Center, removing 250,000 tons of debris. During this operation, officials also provided housing options for several individuals residing in the park, a location previously associated with multiple fire incidents.
Despite these efforts, residents report that many individuals are still living in vehicles, with the city postponing a planned enforcement action in favor of simply placing "no parking" signs. This decision has led numerous vehicles to relocate to the park’s lot or into nearby residential areas. Residents who decline offers of shelter often move to adjacent Van Nuys, where cleanup efforts occur weekly.
Looking ahead, city officials and local residents are scheduled to meet to discuss ongoing sidewalk maintenance and address community concerns. As they navigate these challenges, neighborhood advocates continue to call for a more sustainable enforcement strategy to address the enduring presence of RVs in the Balboa area.
