Duke’s Malibu to Reopen After a Year Following the Palisades Fire
Duke’s Malibu Set to Reopen After Long Closure Due to Fire and Mudslide
LOS ANGELES – Duke’s Malibu, a well-known restaurant and bar, will reopen on Friday, March 13, after a closure of nearly 14 months stemming from the Palisades Fire and a subsequent mudslide.
The Hawaiian-themed establishment initially weathered the fire but was then significantly impacted by heavy rains that caused a mudslide. This devastating event deposited four feet of debris into the restaurant, necessitating a complete interior renovation and resulting in the layoff of 126 employees.
Located at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Duke’s Malibu will operate for limited hours, welcoming guests four days a week from noon to 7 or 8 p.m. The recent renovations have included the replacement of the restaurant’s deck, allowing patrons to once again enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean while savoring a mai tai at sunset.
Duke’s Malibu has a rich history, having opened nearly 30 years ago in honor of legendary Hawaiian surfer and Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku. During the Palisades Fire, the restaurant’s spacious parking lot served as a crucial staging area for firefighters and first responders combating the flames that ultimately destroyed over 6,800 structures in the area.
