Duke’s Malibu is Back After a Year of Recovery from Fire and Mudslides
Duke’s Malibu to Reopen After Extensive Repairs Following Natural Disasters
MALIBU, Calif. – Duke’s Malibu, a well-known restaurant along the Pacific Coast Highway, is set to reopen on March 13, 2026, after a 14-month closure prompted by the Palisades Fire and subsequent mudslides.
The establishment temporarily closed on January 7, 2025, as the Palisades Fire devastated the region, destroying over 6,800 structures. While Duke’s was spared from the flames thanks to first responders stationed in its parking lot, the situation quickly deteriorated. Heavy rains triggered significant mudslides that inundated the restaurant with four feet of debris, necessitating a complete interior renovation. As a result, the restaurant announced the layoffs of 126 staff members.
The reopening marks a significant milestone for both the restaurant and the community, as the original management team and executive chef return to guide operations. Initially, Duke’s will operate on a limited basis, welcoming patrons four days a week, with hours currently estimated to be from noon to 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. The specific days of operation have yet to be finalized.
While the dining room and "Barefoot Bar" will welcome customers, long-term operational schedules are still under development. As staffing stabilizes, Duke’s plans to expand its hours in alignment with the ongoing community recovery efforts along the Pacific Coast Highway.
In addition to the reopening of Duke’s, the timeline of events highlights the challenges faced by the restaurant and the broader Malibu area:
- January 7, 2025: Duke’s closes due to the Palisades Fire.
- February 2025: A mudslide from Las Flores Canyon leads to extensive damage within the restaurant.
- March 2025: Management announces staff layoffs to adjust to the situation.
- February 2026: A traditional Hawaiian kahu blessing is held in the renovated space.
- March 13, 2026: Duke’s Malibu officially reopens.
This reopening symbolizes hope and resilience for a community still recovering from the impacts of natural disasters. Duke’s aims to play a vital role in the revitalization of local businesses and the hospitality sector in Malibu.
