Disney Partners with OpenAI for Exciting $1B Deal to Bring Characters to Life with Sora
Disney has made a significant investment in artificial intelligence, entering into a landmark agreement with OpenAI. The entertainment giant has committed $1 billion to the AI company, partnering to integrate beloved characters from franchises such as Frozen and Star Wars into the generative AI video app, Sora.
This collaboration marks one of the most notable alliances between a major Hollywood studio and an AI firm to date, indicating Disney’s strategic pivot toward embracing AI technology rather than resisting it.
Under a three-year licensing agreement, Sora users will now be able to create personalized fan videos featuring iconic characters like Captain America, Yoda, and Moana. Select videos will also be showcased on Disney+, a move the company hinted at during a recent earnings call.
Sora 2, the latest version of the app, faced backlash from rights holders upon its October launch due to its opt-out policy, which allowed intellectual property to be used unless a rights holder requested its removal.

Disney is solidifying its role as a key content licensing partner for Sora, which enables users to create short-form videos using text prompts.
In addition to its partnership with Sora, Disney will leverage OpenAI’s technology to develop new products and experiences, including enhancements for Disney+. The agreement does not permit OpenAI to train its machine learning models on Disney’s intellectual property.
Disney CEO Bob Iger remarked, “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing with it new ways to create and share great stories with the world. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works. Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before, giving them richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love.”
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, added, “This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”
Characters available for use in Sora will include figures such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Ariel, Belle, and many more from popular franchises, including Marvel and Lucasfilm. Notable characters like Black Panther, Darth Vader, and Yoda will also be featured.
The partnership seeks to avoid exploiting the performances of actors, with assurances from both Disney and OpenAI to respect the rights of individuals regarding their voice and likeness. Furthermore, the agreement emphasizes a shared commitment to implementing strong measures against the generation of harmful or illegal content.
