Lily Allen Channels Nostalgia on SNL with Powerful Performance
On December 13, singer Lily Allen took the stage at Studio 8H, New York, for a memorable performance on Saturday Night Live. The 40-year-old artist showcased her latest songs, "Madeline" and "Sleepwalking," from her new album West End Girl.
The set design for Allen’s performances bore an uncanny resemblance to the Brooklyn home she once shared with ex-husband David Harbour, adding an emotional layer to her act. This distinctive backdrop echoed elements from their interior design, previously featured in a 2023 Architectural Digest house tour video.
Items such as decorative wallpaper, pink silk bedsheets, a green chair, and a palm tree lamp transported viewers back to moments spent in the former couple’s home. The design choices had been originally highlighted during their house tour, where Harbour praised the elaborate wallpaper created by Zuber, remarking, "They are unbelievable."
Several viewers remarked on the nostalgia evoked by the set during Allen’s performance, with some commenting that the wallpaper was "iconic" and even noting the subtleties that connected it to Harbour’s obsession with it during their time together.
People were reminded of Allen and Harbour’s recent separation, confirmed in February after four years of marriage. An insider revealed at the time that "Her marriage has been crumbling, and they have split." Following their split, the couple listed their townhouse for $8 million.
The emotional depth of the songs performed reflects the complexities of romantic relationships. "Madeline" narrates a confrontation with a woman who had an affair with the narrator’s partner, while "Sleepwalking" addresses frustrations tied to past relationships.
Allen’s performance of "Madeline" featured a poignant cameo by Dakota Johnson, who captivated the audience by gradually revealing herself before embracing Allen near the song’s conclusion.
In a recent announcement, Allen confirmed a North American tour for West End Girl, which will mark her largest tour yet, with stops in cities including Toronto, Boston, and San Francisco.
