Devin Wright Guides Redondo Union to a Strong Victory Against Mira Costa
Redondo Union Hands Mira Costa a Decisive Defeat in Bay League Clash
In a commanding display on Friday night, Redondo Union secured an 85-51 victory over Mira Costa, highlighted by a spectacular two-handed dunk from senior guard Devin Wright as the game wound down. This win extends the Sea Hawks’ unbeaten streak in the Bay League and reinforces their position as a formidable contender.
Wright led all scorers with 23 points, primarily from layups while navigating through the defense. Supporting him were small forward SJ Madison with 19 points, Chace Holley, who contributed 17, and Chris Sanders, who added another 16. The Sea Hawks, currently ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, demonstrated their collective strength and skill throughout the game.
“We knew this was a big game and I had to be there for my team,” Wright stated, noting his late-game surge when he scored 18 points in the final two quarters. “We saw early they couldn’t contain us, so we were getting open looks and hitting them.”
The first quarter showcased a competitive back-and-forth between Madison and Mira Costa’s Paxx Bell, ending with Redondo leading 20-18. By halftime, Redondo expanded its lead to seven points, executing a decisive 23-7 run in the third quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.
“Chace is a big weapon, but we’re all weapons,” Wright added. “If they double-team him, it leaves someone else open. We all took our turns.”
Bell was the standout for the Mustangs, scoring 15 points, while senior shooting guard Luke Lowell and junior wing Strax Dragicevic each chipped in 12 points. The Mustangs, currently ranked 19th and holding a record of 18-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, faced tough competition from the Sea Hawks.
The rivalry between these two teams has a history, as they shared the league title last season, each claiming victory in the other’s gym. With this latest win, Redondo Union (18-3, 4-0) sent a clear message regarding their intent to secure the title outright.
“We didn’t like splitting league with them last year,” Wright commented. “So this year it’s all ours — and we’re taking it.”
Last season, Redondo Union defeated Mira Costa 72-66 in the CIF state Division I regional semifinals but fell one game short of the finals after losing to Sierra Canyon. Mira Costa also faced disappointment, losing to Los Alamitos in the Southern Section Division 1 final. However, the focus here is firmly on the present.
The two teams are set to face off again on February 3 to conclude Bay League play at Manhattan Beach.
