Demi Lovato Shares Her Inspiration for Singing ‘Heart Attack’ at an American Heart Association Event

During a 2024 event for the American Heart Association (AHA), Demi Lovato performed her 2013 hit “Heart Attack,” a choice that raised eyebrows among many attendees and fans.
In a March 19 interview on the *Elvis Duran Show*, Lovato clarified the reasoning behind her performance at the Women Red Dress Collection Concert, held to promote awareness for cardiovascular disease. “I wanna say that they asked me to sing that,” Lovato stated.
She elaborated, “I flagged it beforehand and was like, ‘Isn’t this, like, not the vibe?’ They were like, ‘No, they wanna hear it.’ I was like, ‘OK … ’ And then of course people online are like, ‘Why did she sing that?’ I’m like, ‘Y’all, it wasn’t me! I flagged it!’”
Lovato’s recent comments aim to dispel any lingering doubts regarding her song choice at the event. When she first faced criticism for the performance, her representative informed *Entertainment Weekly*, “It was a sensitive moment intended to champion the women in the room — the very reason why Demi was at the event.”
The rep added, “She did open with a beautiful intro on why she chose the song and addressed the room, talking about the mind and heart connection. It was actually a beautiful moment.”
Lovato’s interview coincides with the promotion of her new cookbook, *One Plate at a Time*. In October, she also released the album *It’s Not That Deep*, which debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200.
