Death Cab for Cutie has announced the release of a new single and an upcoming album, as revealed on Monday, March 16.
Comprised of bandmates Ben Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae, the group will release I Built You a Tower—their first LP since 2022—on June 5 via ANTI- Records. The album’s lead single, “Riptides,” was launched on the same day and delves into “the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale,” according to Gibbard.
Gibbard further expressed that the song reflects on the intense feelings that arise when personal and global traumas intertwine, describing the experience as “utterly paralyzing.”
The accompanying visuals for the single feature the band amidst a vibrant light display, with purple and blue hues illuminating their silhouettes. This aesthetic introduces listeners to the contemplative atmosphere that permeates I Built You a Tower, a project Gibbard crafted while managing the pressures of leading both Death Cab and Postal Service during a joint nostalgia tour in 2023. This period also coincided with significant challenges in his personal life, which he described as being on the verge of “collapse.”
“There’s this need to find a place in ourselves to put loss and grief,” Gibbard remarked about the upcoming album. “A place that can hold it so we can move on with our lives. But there are these moments where the trauma breaks out of that shell we created for it.”
The band’s last album, Asphalt Meadows, was released four years ago, reaching No. 60 on the Billboard 200. Death Cab for Cutie has achieved a total of ten entries on the Billboard chart, including their No. 1 album Narrow Stairs in 2008.
Following the release of I Built You a Tower, Death Cab will commence a tour in May, covering North America and Europe, with support from artists such as Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast, Nation of Language, and Lala Lala.
