David Letterman and Stephen Colbert Celebrate CBS Goodbye with a Roof-Top Furniture Toss
Stephen Colbert and David Letterman engaged in a playful yet nostalgic moment last night, revisiting one of Letterman’s classic late-night segments that involved throwing objects from the rooftop of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Amidst laughter, the two *Late Show* hosts took to the air to smash studio chairs, quickly demolishing a sidewalk target marked by the CBS eye logo, which sent colorful balls rolling onto the street. They also dropped watermelons, a nod to one of Letterman’s most cherished stunts during his *Late Show with David Letterman* era.
The duo concluded their rooftop escapade with Colbert launching a multi-layered congratulatory cake from the network. Letterman’s farewell included a memorable sign-off, echoing the words of the famed broadcaster Ed Murrow: “In the words of the great Ed Murrow, good night and good luck, motherf*ckers!”

Before this rooftop adventure, Letterman appeared on the couch to speak with Colbert, earning a standing ovation from the audience, accompanied by the house band’s rendition of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”
“How about Paul and the band?” Letterman quipped, referencing his long-time sidekick. Addressing the audience, he noted, “I came very close to being teary about that, so thank you everybody.”
Letterman then reflected on his legacy: “I have every right to be pissed off, so I’ll be pissed off here a little bit. Because you folks wouldn’t be at this theater if it weren’t for me, and Stephen wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me. We rebuilt this theater and then Stephen came in here and, look at this, it’s like the Bellagio. As we all understand, you can take a man’s show, you can’t take a man’s voice. So that’s the good news.”
He expressed concern for the future of late-night programming, wondering, “You know what I’m really worried about? What I’m really worried about is what will become of the Jimmys? Are they going to be all right?”
Colbert responded with humor, saying, “We’ve got a plan to put them in a captive breeding program.”
