Darren Aronofsky’s AI Studio Introduces New Animated Series on the Revolutionary War
Primordial Soup and Google DeepMind Launch Animated Series on American Revolution
Primordial Soup, the studio founded by acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, has announced the launch of an animated short-form series about the American Revolution in collaboration with Google DeepMind. The series, titled On This Day … 1776, is set to premiere new episodes on Time’s YouTube channel throughout 2026.
As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July, the series aims to engage audiences with historical narratives. The first two episodes, along with a trailer, are currently available on the network’s YouTube channel. Various media outlets and political figures are expected to highlight the significance of this anniversary throughout the year.
The project originated from a strategic partnership established last May between Primordial Soup and Google DeepMind, with a focus on merging innovative storytelling with advanced technology. The series aims to portray the Revolutionary War not as an inevitable outcome, but rather as a complex and precarious endeavor shaped by its participants.
On This Day employs a unique blend of traditional filmmaking techniques and AI to create narrative episodes depicting the events of 1776. Each episode coincides with the 250th anniversary of specific moments from the year, according to the companies involved in the project.
Historical records are the foundation for this animated series, with artists utilizing generative AI tools to bring the stories to life. Notably, the project engages voice actors recognized by SAG-AFTRA, a significant aspect as the union prepares for upcoming contract negotiations with the AMPTP. The post-production team at Primordial Soup is responsible for editing, mixing, and color grading the episodes.
Time Studios, the film, TV, and digital division of the news outlet, is participating in the initiative in its effort to establish itself as a distribution platform for innovative creators. Studio president Ben Bitonti highlighted the importance of this project, stating, “This project is a glimpse at what thoughtful, creative, artist-led use of AI can look like – not replacing craft, but expanding what’s possible and allowing storytellers to go places they simply couldn’t before.”
Darren Aronofsky serves as the executive producer for On This Day, with Lucas Sussman leading the writers’ room.
