Daniil Medvedev Surprises Top Seed Carlos Alcaraz to Make It to the Indian Wells Final
Medvedev Defeats Alcaraz to Reach Indian Wells Final
INDIAN WELLS — Daniil Medvedev delivered a stunning upset against top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, securing a spot in the final of the Indian Wells tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory on Saturday. This loss marks Alcaraz’s first of the year, having previously enjoyed a 16-match winning streak that included titles at the Australian Open and Qatar Open.
Medvedev, the 11th seed from Russia, will face Italy’s second-seeded Jannik Sinner in the final. Sinner advanced after a decisive 6-2, 6-4 win over Alexander Zverev, showcasing his skills in a match that lasted just 1 hour and 23 minutes. Sinner recorded six aces and now leads the head-to-head series against Zverev 7-4.
Alcaraz’s defeat is particularly notable given that Medvedev had lost their last four encounters, including the final at Indian Wells in 2024. This victory is Medvedev’s first over Alcaraz since their semifinal match at the U.S. Open in 2023.
In the women’s doubles final, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova triumphed over Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4. This win marks Townsend’s first title at Indian Wells and Siniakova’s second, adding to her victory in 2023 alongside partner Barbora Krejcikova. The match concluded in 94 minutes, bolstered by an impressive 80% success rate on first serve points for Townsend and Siniakova.
As the tournament progresses, Aryna Sabalenka is set to face Elena Rybakina in the final, following her semifinal victory over Linda Noskova with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Sabalenka, a two-time runner-up at Indian Wells, will look to secure her first title in this prestigious event.
