Curry Takes a Step Back on ‘SVU’ Following Aimé Donna Kelly’s Comments About Character Tensions
Major Shake-Up for Capt. Renee Curry on Law and Order: SVU
In an upcoming episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Capt. Renee Curry faces a significant demotion after conflicting with Chief Kathryn Tynan. An exclusive clip released by Us Weekly provides a glimpse into the April 2 episode, wherein Sgt. Amanda Rollins, portrayed by Kelli Giddish, observes Curry in her new role as executive officer at the precinct.
“What’s the secret to your success? Not one officer checking their phone. They must like you,” Rollins remarks to Curry, who has just dismissed a class of newly appointed police officers.

Curry hints at a strict approach to leadership: “There may or may not be a rumor going around that anyone not paying attention to the rule gets zero OT.” Rollins responds, “You’re laying down the hammer.”
Addressing the challenges within the squad, Curry admits, “I’m a natural teacher.” Rollins expresses her discomfort, stating, “I don’t like this.” To which Curry retorts, “There’s nothing to like. It is what it is.” Rollins adds, “Can I still be mad for you?”
As the conversation shifts, Curry mentions her need to attend a budgeting meeting, before sending a message to Detective Jake Griffin about a double parking issue.
The episode, titled “Vivid,” follows a March 12 episode where Chief Kathryn Tynan, portrayed by Noma Dumezweni, offered Curry the position of deputy chief of SVU. Curry declined, citing her unwillingness to be manipulated by Tynan, who is a central antagonist this season. Curry later expressed her reassignment news to Capt. Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay. Benson remarked, “She’s doing this to get to me. I’m not letting that happen.”

As SVU prepares for its 27th season premiere in September 2025, Aimé Donna Kelly teased that her character’s journey will dramatically evolve amid tensions between Benson and Tynan. Kelly, who has been elevated to a series regular, remarked, “If your leader is going through some stuff, then the rest of us definitely are. We all feel a little bit of that tension, and I can’t give too much away, but it heats up.”
Reflecting on the evolution of her character, Kelly expressed her enthusiasm for viewer engagement: “What’s beautiful about how Curry’s journey has come to be over the past couple of seasons is she’s also learning from them. She’s understanding that there is a different way to police. You can lead with empathy and hear the other person’s side of the story first, instead of always coming with the facts.”
New episodes of Law and Order: SVU are set to premiere on NBC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and will be available for streaming the following day on Peacock.
