Cristian Mungiu Aims for Cannes Premiere with New Film ‘Fjord’ Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve
Cristian Mungiu to Return to Cannes with English-Language Film ‘Fjord’
Palme d’Or laureate Cristian Mungiu has announced plans to return to the Cannes Film Festival in 2026 with his first English-language feature, Fjord. This film stars Sebastian Stan, known for his work in The Apprentice, alongside Renate Reinsve from Sentimental Value.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of a Norwegian fjord, the story follows a mixed Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate to the village of the wife’s birth. Their aspirations for a new life become complicated when they encounter another couple with contrasting perspectives.
"I couldn’t have met them in a better circumstance for their careers," Mungiu remarked about his collaboration with Stan. "I enjoyed working with them, and I hope that everybody will appreciate how they brought this delicate and intimate story to life."
In a recent interview, Mungiu reflected on the film’s unique dynamics, noting, “It’s very funny that this project that we’ve done now, it’s his first in Romanian, but my first in English.” Stan, who was born and raised in Romania until the age of eight, connects with his roots through this project, even incorporating some Romanian dialogue into the script. Mungiu highlighted that the film features a blend of English and Norwegian, with occasional Romanian phrases sprinkled throughout.
This marks Mungiu’s first film in three years since the 2022 drama R.M.N. The director has an illustrious history at Cannes, having competed four times and won the Palme d’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007, along with other accolades for Beyond The Hills and Graduation.
Currently, Mungiu is attending the Marrakech Film Festival, where he serves as the patron of the Atlas Workshops project incubator, aimed at nurturing future films from the Middle East and Africa. The program features various promising projects from filmmakers such as Suha Arraf and Scandar Copti, alongside films anticipated to premiere at upcoming festivals.
Mungiu expressed his commitment to fostering new talent, stating, "You can meet a lot of fresh ideas about cinema… it’s crucial that cinema is always refreshed by those who do not want to imitate the models they have seen, but rather find and assert their own unique voices within the festival circuit."
