Ten Seniors Rescued from Alleged Illegal Nursing Homes in South Bay
In a disturbing incident in the South Bay, law enforcement officials rescued ten seniors from illegal nursing homes where they were reportedly neglected and fed moldy food. The investigation has led to the arrest of a couple on suspicion of elder abuse.
Alicia Hogg, 72, and Gary Hogg, 80, face multiple charges, including elder abuse and fraud, amid allegations of operating unlicensed care facilities in Carson and Torrance. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) described the conditions in these homes as grim.
Detectives executed search warrants at several locations suspected of running unlicensed care homes, discovering seven malnourished seniors at a residence on the 200 block of West 234th Street in Carson on February 24. Three additional seniors were rescued shortly after.
Sheriff’s deputies allege that the Hogg couple was operating these facilities without the necessary licenses. “They are unlicensed, so hopefully we get them to stop operating,” LASD Lt. Quiana Penn stated.
In defense of her sister, Victoria Palonio, Alicia Hogg’s sister, denied that any illegal operations were taking place. “She just accepts rent, renters in the house,” Palonio commented.
Those rescued from the unlicensed facilities have since been placed into proper care housing to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
