Coretta Scott King’s Quest for the Truth About MLK’s Death Comes to Life with Byron Allen & Ava DuVernay
EXCLUSIVE: Producers Byron Allen and Ava DuVernay are developing a feature film centered on Coretta Scott King’s quest for the truth behind the 1968 assassination of her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The film, titled King Vs. The United States of America, aims to explore King’s relentless pursuit of justice in the aftermath of the tragic events in Memphis. This project coincides with the 20th anniversary of King’s passing, shining a light on her influential role during the turbulent years of the Sixties.
Dr. King was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, with James Earl Ray being identified as his lone assassin. However, Coretta Scott King and much of her family never subscribed to this narrative. Their skepticism was bolstered by extensive investigations, including a Senate committee in the mid-1970s that uncovered illegal surveillance and harassment by the FBI. A 1999 jury trial ultimately concluded there was a conspiracy involving “government agencies” beyond Ray.

Coretta Scott King emerged as a significant leader following her husband’s assassination, advocating for justice, equality, feminism, and LGBTQ rights. As the founder of The King Center, she became a powerful political figure and a vocal opponent of South Africa’s apartheid regime.
King Vs. The United States Of America will be produced by Allen along with Carolyn Folks, Jennifer Lucas, Chris Charalambous, and Matthew Signer.
On Friday, coinciding with National Shutdown protests and incidents of racially motivated arrests of journalists, Bernice King reflected on her family’s legacy. She honored her late brother, Dexter, on what would have been his 65th birthday and marked the 20th anniversary of her mother’s death.
In tribute – Today, my brother, Dexter, would be celebrating his 65th birthday. And on this day, 20 years ago, my mother, Coretta Scott King, transitioned from this life.
I miss them both deeply and carry them with me always – In memory, in love, and in gratitude.… pic.twitter.com/MmwoyT02O7
