Coral Williams and Angelina Gonzales Help Norco Claim Victory at the Michelle Carew Softball Classic
Norco High Pitcher Leads Cougars to Championship Victory
In a commanding performance, Norco High pitcher Coral Williams secured a three-hit shutout during the Gold Bracket championship game of the Michelle Carew Softball Classic. The Cougars triumphed over Fullerton with a 7-0 victory Saturday night at Peralta Park in Anaheim, marking their sixth tournament title.
Williams displayed her dominance on the mound with five strikeouts, while teammate Angelina Gonzales notably hit two home runs. The match, featuring teams ranked second and third in CalHiSports.com’s top 20 rankings, was effectively decided early. After Kendra Nelson walked to open the game, Gonzales belted a deep shot over the left-field fence, putting the Cougars ahead 2-0. In the fourth inning, Isabella Ray added a solo home run, followed by Gonzales’s second homer in the fifth, offering Williams a substantial four-run cushion.
“It was the same pitch both times — I think they were trying to surprise me on the second one,” Gonzales said. “If I didn’t get it done, I knew the next player would do the job. We have each other’s backs.”
Williams, last spring’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 Player of the Year, was named the tournament’s most valuable pitcher. She yielded just one unearned run across 24 innings throughout the tournament. Earlier in the week, she recorded a four-hitter with nine strikeouts against Millikan and followed up with a six-hitter featuring ten strikeouts in a tense 2-1 win over Anaheim Canyon spanning ten innings.
“I felt confident in my preparation for this game and told myself to stay loose and don’t overthink,” Williams remarked. “I pitched around the zone a lot so they couldn’t do damage.”
With a current record of 14-2, the No. 3 ranked Cougars have allowed only two earned runs this season and have shut out 13 opponents.
“I love playing behind Coral,” Gonzales added. “She makes my job easier.”
Fullerton’s Hayley Brock, heading to Utah Valley, made her presence known against Williams, hitting a single in her first at-bat. Despite her team’s loss, Brock was named tournament MVP after going 11 for 18 with four home runs, two doubles, and 14 RBIs.
“It’s a great feeling to be named MVP; it just sucks coming up one win short,” Brock stated, reflecting on her performance and the challenge posed by Williams. “That pitcher is so good. You want to attack her earlier in the count. You don’t want to get to two strikes with her.”
Williams acknowledged the threat posed by Brock, stating, “I just had to be smart with my pitches and trust my defense. We all need to be loose tonight and not be as tense and uptight.”
Norco reached the finals after a strong 2-0 victory against Orange Lutheran, where pitcher Peyton May allowed five hits and struck out eight. The Cougars found success with a solo homer from Sadie Burroughs and an RBI double from Savannah Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, Fullerton demonstrated impressive power in their semifinal, hitting five homers to defeat Ganesha 9-4. Brock contributed two homers in that match, while pitcher Katelynn Mathews improved to 11-0 with the win.
The tournament, which began as the Canyon Tournament of Champions in the mid-1980s, was renamed in memory of Michelle Carew, who passed away from a rare form of leukemia in 1996. She was the daughter of Angels Hall of Famer Rod Carew.
