Copper Wire Thefts Increase in Tarzana Neighborhood During Los Angeles Outages
Copper Wire Theft Incidents Rise in Tarzana
LOS ANGELES – A series of copper wire thefts has struck Tarzana, with recent incidents prompting concerns among residents and law enforcement alike. Early Sunday morning, local police responded to a report of stolen wires along Wells Drive near Amigo Avenue, highlighting a troubling trend that has emerged across the city.
Surveillance footage captured the aftermath, showing damaged wires hanging near homes at approximately 4:12 a.m. This latest theft is part of a wider pattern affecting multiple neighborhoods in Los Angeles, contributing to outages and hindering repair efforts.
Just last week, similar criminal activity in Van Nuys resulted in thieves stealing underground internet cables, which left many residents without service and street lighting. In response to these ongoing issues, city officials are considering plans to install solar-powered streetlights.
Residents walking by the police tape in Tarzana expressed their alarm at the brazen crime. “I was horrified, and truth be told, this is a really nice neighborhood. All of us have Ring cameras and cameras around our homes, so I think we all need to be hyper-vigilant right now about keeping an eye out for this type of crime,” one local remarked.
In a bid to address the city’s deteriorating infrastructure, the City Council has approved a plan to raise property assessment fees for the first time in nearly 30 years. This increase is projected to generate approximately $125 million, aimed at long-term maintenance and improvements. However, the proposal will undergo proceedings that permit property owners to voice protests or objections.
As of Sunday evening, the LAPD has not made any arrests in connection with the Tarzana thefts. The Department of Water and Power has been alerted to the situation as authorities continue to investigate these ongoing crimes.
