Bald Eagle Eaglet Hatched Near Big Bear Lake
A new eaglet has emerged from its shell, bringing excitement to viewers following the beloved bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow. The chick hatched on Saturday night at 9:33 p.m. near Big Bear Lake, as confirmed by livestream cameras operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley.
The hatching occurred shortly after another egg in the nest was observed pipping earlier in the day, indicating it was on the verge of breaking open. However, this second egg will not be officially considered hatched until the chick fully exits its shell. According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, this process can take between 24 to 48 hours after the initial pip.
This milestone comes after a disheartening event earlier in the season when the couple’s two eggs, laid in January, were breached by ravens while Jackie and Shadow were away from the nest. Many eagle enthusiasts were saddened by this loss. Following this incident, Jackie laid a second clutch of eggs in February, leading to the recent hatching.
The egg-laying season for bald eagles in the Big Bear area typically spans from January to April, providing a significant period for new life to flourish in the region.
