Conan O’Brien Bids Farewell as Oscars Host, Pays Tribute to Martin Short After His Loss
Conan O’Brien paid a heartfelt tribute to Martin Short as he concluded his hosting duties for the 98th Academy Awards. “It’s been an honor and a joy,” O’Brien remarked, reflecting on his second stint as host. He added, “We love you, Marty Short. Good night.”
His comments come in the wake of profound loss for Short, whose daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Short, tragically died by suicide at the age of 42 at her home in Los Angeles less than a month ago. This devastating news adds to a difficult period for Short, who has also recently mourned the passing of his SCTV co-star, Catherine O’Hara. Following these events, Short has taken a break from his comedy tour with Steve Martin, though dates on Martin’s website suggest he may resume performances in April.
In the wake of Katherine’s death, the Short family issued a statement to People expressing their sorrow: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
O’Brien, a longtime friend of Short, has collaborated with him through various mediums, including his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, and in the late-night scene. O’Brien’s closing remarks as he exited the Dolby Theatre resonated deeply, reflecting both friendship and compassion amid tragedy.
