Historic Performances at the 2026 ASICS Los Angeles Marathon
On Sunday, over 27,000 athletes participated in the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon, making it a day of remarkable athletic achievement.
In what became a record-setting finale, Nathan Martin of the United States edged out Kenya’s Michael Kimani Kamau in a thrilling photo finish, resulting in the closest finish in the event’s history. The dramatic conclusion unfolded in Century City as Martin made a late surge, winning by merely one second. Both competitors crossed the finish line with the same official time of 2:11:17, with Martin declared the victor.

At 36, Martin, a teacher and track coach from Three River, Michigan, becomes only the second American to win the LA Marathon since 1994, following 2025 champion Matt Richtman. The event’s organizers highlighted that Martin’s margin of victory surpassed the previous record of seven seconds set by 2019 champion Elisha Barno.
In the women’s division, Priscah Cherono of Kenya led from start to finish, clinching her victory with a time of 2:25:19. Cherono’s performance just fell short of her personal best by one second, demonstrating her competitive spirit.

The 2026 LA Marathon also featured several notable statistics. More than 9,100 runners, representing 41% of the total participants, competed in their first-ever marathon. Among the competitors, 86 "legacy athletes" had completed all 41 LA Marathons. Additionally, the race showcased 200 running clubs from around the world, indicating a diverse and enthusiastic participation.
