Wrongful Death Trial Commences in Shooting of Teen Girl
LOS ANGELES — A wrongful death trial is currently in session concerning the tragic shooting of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta. The young girl was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a police response at a Burlington department store in North Hollywood on December 23, 2021.
During the closing arguments, the family’s attorney, Nick Rowley, emphasized the emotional toll of the incident, stating, "It’s a wrongful death case, but it’s also a negligent infliction of emotional distress and PTSD case. Valentina’s mother was holding her when she was shot with the AR-15. She had her daughter die in her arms in the most unimaginable way."
The incident unfolded when Los Angeles police responded to reports of a man attacking individuals with a bike lock. As officers engaged with the assailant, identified as 24-year-old Daniel Lopez, Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. discharged his rifle. This action led to both Lopez and Orellana-Peralta being fatally injured.
More than four years after this tragic event, the LAPD is facing a lawsuit for wrongful death. Rowley highlighted the psychological ramifications stemming from the incident, suggesting a broader narrative of trauma endured by the family.
The trial’s closing arguments coincide with the Justice Department’s previous decision not to pursue criminal charges against Officer Jones for his involvement in the shooting. According to reports, the arguments may conclude as soon as Tuesday, May 5.
