Clippers Fall to Trail Blazers, Making Playoff Hopes More Challenging
Portland Trail Blazers Secure Crucial Win Over Clippers, Eyes Playoff Spot
PORTLAND, Ore. — Deni Avdija delivered a standout performance with 35 points, while Donovan Clingan contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Los Angeles Clippers 116-97 on Friday night. This victory positions the Blazers favorably for the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
Should Portland triumph over the Sacramento Kings this Sunday, they will secure a place in the 7-8 play-in game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.
In addition to Avdija and Clingan, Robert Williams III added 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Blazers showcased strong rebounding skills, outpacing the Clippers 46-35, and while they have led the league in turnovers, they managed to win the turnover battle in this matchup.
Despite an early 55-35 lead for Portland, the Clippers fought back. A three-pointer from Jordan Miller propelled Los Angeles to an 82-79 advantage late in the third quarter, their first lead since the opening period. However, Matisse Thybulle quickly tied the game at 82 for Portland.
With the score knotted at 88 in the final quarter, Williams pushed Portland ahead, scoring shortly after Jrue Holiday drew two free throws. His dunk extended the lead to 92-88, prompting a Clippers timeout. Following the break, Kawhi Leonard missed a critical jumper, allowing Avdija to execute a pivotal three-point play.
Avdija’s foul shots and Toumani Camara’s subsequent basket extended Portland’s lead to 101-93. A technical foul on Brook Lopez allowed Avdija to widen the gap further to 104-93 with just over three minutes remaining. A three-pointer from Avdija later sealed the game at 109-93, allowing Portland to maintain control until the final buzzer.
Additionally, Shaedon Sharpe returned to action after a 28-game absence, contributing eight points in 15 minutes of play.
Next, the Clippers will host the Golden State Warriors on Sunday as they continue their campaign.
