Clippers Fall to Spurs in Kawhi Leonard’s Absence
Spurs Edge Clippers in Tight Contest as Wembanyama Shines
In a thrilling match on Monday night at Intuit Dome, the San Antonio Spurs rallied from an early 14-point deficit to secure a narrow 119-115 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Victor Wembanyama delivered a notable performance, contributing 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Leading the charge for the Spurs (50-18) was Stephon Castle, who recorded 23 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. This victory marked the Spurs’ 50th win of the season, their first since the 2016-17 campaign, putting them three games behind the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference standings. Devin Vassell also made his mark with 20 points.
Meanwhile, the Clippers, who are vying for a play-in tournament spot, faced their second consecutive defeat, slipping back to a .500 record. The absence of star player Kawhi Leonard, sidelined with a sprained left knee, was keenly felt as the team struggled to find momentum.
Darius Garland led the Clippers with 25 points and 10 assists, supported by Jordan Miller’s 22 points off the bench. The Clippers’ reserves had a strong outing, outscoring the Spurs’ bench 57-30.
After building a 24-point lead in the third quarter, the Spurs faced a late challenge. Following a 7-0 run that gave San Antonio a comfortable lead at 115-102, Garland scored seven of the Clippers’ final nine points, cutting the deficit to four with just 38 seconds remaining. However, the Spurs managed to hit four consecutive free throws, securing the win.
The game commenced with a sluggish start for the Spurs, who missed eight of their first nine shots and fell behind 17-3. The Clippers capitalized on this, shooting 65% in the first quarter, making five of seven three-pointers and converting 10 of 12 free throws.
San Antonio turned the tide in the second quarter, erasing their 14-point deficit. They ended the period on a 15-0 run and outscored the Clippers 37-15, leading 66-52 at halftime. This fightback demonstrated the Spurs’ resilience, as they took control of the game for the second half.
