Clippers Fall Short Against Rockets Despite Late Opportunities
HOUSTON — Amen Thompson’s crucial three-point play in the final seconds propelled the Houston Rockets to a hard-fought 115-113 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night.
With just 17.2 seconds remaining, Thompson tipped in a missed shot from Alperen Sengun, breaking a 110-110 deadlock. After being fouled by Kris Dunn, Thompson completed the three-point play at the free-throw line. This putback was the Rockets’ third offensive rebound during that possession, part of a dominant 21-rebound night on the offensive glass.
Thompson’s performance was stellar, as he scored 20 points, with nine rebounds and eight assists, shooting 66.7% from the field.
The Rockets, now holding a record of 16-6, commanded the boards, outrebounding the Clippers 51-28. This victory also ensured that the Rockets avoided consecutive losses for the first time since October 24.
In a game with high stakes, the Clippers had opportunities to equalize but faltered. Kawhi Leonard was called for an offensive foul, and Nicolas Batum mishandled an inbounds pass during a critical possession.
Leading the Rockets was Sengun, who finished the game with 22 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Jabari Smith Jr. also contributed, adding 18 points to the scoreboard.
Kevin Durant found his rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 13 of his 16 points after a slow start in which he hit just one of his first seven shots.
For the Clippers, Ivica Zubac achieved a season-high with 33 points, hitting 13 of 14 attempts and collecting seven rebounds. Leonard led the team with 24 points in 41 minutes, while James Harden added 22 points against his former team.
The Clippers, struggling with a record of 6-19, have now lost three consecutive games and eight of their last nine. They will look to turn things around when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.
