Charlie Kolar Joins the Chargers on a Three-Year Deal
The Los Angeles Chargers are making strategic moves to enhance their run-blocking capabilities as they prepare for the upcoming season under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. On Monday, the team confirmed a three-year, $24.3 million agreement with former Baltimore Ravens tight end Charlie Kolar, which includes $17 million guaranteed, according to NFL Media.
Kolar, often recognized as the top run-blocking tight end available before free agency, is expected to provide significant support to a Chargers running game that faced challenges last season. Coach Jim Harbaugh frequently relied on quarterback Justin Herbert, even with healthy running backs, highlighting the need for improvement in the rushing attack.
In addition to his blocking skills, Kolar’s versatility may also benefit tight end Oronde Gadsden II in the aerial game. His signing is particularly relevant as he replaces Will Dissly, who was released last week. Kolar’s connection to the Chargers runs deep; he played for Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft during the tenure of Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz as the Ravens’ director of player personnel.
In his time with the Ravens, Kolar, 27, recorded 30 receptions for 409 yards and four touchdowns over four seasons. Last year alone, he totaled 10 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chargers’ offseason efforts reflect a concerted focus on strengthening their offense and improving protection. Earlier this week, the team also reached an agreement with former Miami Dolphins fullback Alec Ingold, further enhancing their offensive strategy under McDaniel.
