Charges Filed in Fatal 605 Freeway Crash Involving CHP Officer
Charges have been formally announced in connection with a tragic crash last year on the 605 Freeway that claimed four lives. The announcement was made on Monday, with further details expected during a scheduled news conference at 10 a.m.
The charges arise from an incident on July 20 in Santa Fe Springs, where a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was reportedly driving southbound in the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane at 130 mph without activating lights or sirens, according to District Attorney Nathan Hochman. The officer’s patrol car struck a Nissan that had legally entered the lane.
Following the collision, the CHP officer pulled over and stopped for approximately three minutes before exiting the freeway. During this time, the officer did not deploy flares or warning lights, leaving the disabled Nissan on the roadway. Subsequently, another vehicle traveling at 110 mph collided with the rear of the Nissan, resulting in a fire while four individuals remained trapped inside.
Updates regarding this developing story will be provided as more information becomes available.
