Chargers Bring Chris O’Leary Onboard as New Defensive Coordinator
Chargers Appoint Chris O’Leary as Defensive Coordinator
The Los Angeles Chargers have announced the return of Chris O’Leary as their defensive coordinator, a role he previously held as the safeties coach in 2024. O’Leary’s appointment comes following a successful tenure in which he guided Western Michigan to a well-regarded season.
During his time at Western Michigan, O’Leary’s defense contributed to a 10-4 record and led the team to the Mid-American Conference Championship. His squad achieved remarkable success, ranking ninth in the Football Bowl Subdivision and second in the MAC for scoring defense, allowing an average of 17.4 points per game.
Prior to his role with the Chargers, O’Leary dedicated six seasons to coaching at Notre Dame, where he eventually became the defensive backs and safeties coach. His journey began as a wide receiver at Indiana State from 2011 to 2014.
In 2024, when O’Leary worked with the Chargers, the defensive unit led by coordinator Jesse Minter allowed just 17.7 points per game, the lowest in the NFL. Under the guidance of Derwin James Jr., the team achieved a 75.9 passer rating against, ranking third among NFL safety units that year.
O’Leary steps into a role previously occupied by Minter, who accepted a head coaching position with the Baltimore Ravens after significantly improving the Chargers’ defense. Minter helped transform a unit that had ranked 28th in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed per game in 2023, moving them up to 11th and first, respectively, in 2024. Last season, the defense maintained a strong performance, finishing fifth in yards per game and ninth in points allowed.
Looking ahead, O’Leary will benefit from a roster with many key defensive players returning for the upcoming season. The Chargers recently re-signed Teair Tart to a three-year contract, solidifying their defensive line. With an estimated $80.5 million in salary-cap space available, general manager Joe Hortiz has indicated plans to reinforce the squad, with re-signing outside linebacker Odafe Oweh among their offseason priorities, particularly if veteran Khalil Mack decides to retire.
While O’Leary may not carry the same high profile as offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, he assumes leadership of a defensive unit poised for further success.
