Changes to California’s Food Benefits Program Affect Non-Citizens

Starting Wednesday, several groups of non-citizens will be barred from accessing California’s food benefits program, as announced by the state’s Department of Public Social Services.

These changes arise from updates in federal policy, excluding certain immigrant groups, including asylum seekers, refugees, and victims of trafficking, from receiving CalFresh benefits. Additionally, individuals facing pending deportation or those on parole will also no longer be eligible for support.

However, Green Card holders may still qualify for CalFresh, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria.

The adjustments reflect the provisions of H.R. 1, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which has redefined the eligibility of potential CalFresh recipients.
