Changes in the Cast: ‘Doc’ Star Exits While New Faces Join the Team
SPOILER ALERT: The following contains details about the two-part Season 2 finale of Fox’s Doc, “Stuck/Happy Birthday.”
EXCLUSIVE: Katie, portrayed by Charlotte Fountain-Jardim, has been instrumental in her mother Amy’s recovery following a severe accident. Their reconciliation is among Amy’s significant milestones as she strives to improve herself while battling memory loss.
This season, Katie played a crucial role as a series regular, having previously recurred in Season 1. A college orientation road trip with her parents, Amy (Molly Parker) and Michael (Omar Metwally), prompted Michael to reassess his career, leading him to resign from his CMO position in favor of a hands-on role as Chief of Internal Medicine. The trip also highlighted the lingering feelings between exes Michael and Amy, complicating Amy’s relationship with Jake.
As Katie heads off to Northwestern University, Fountain-Jardim will transition from a series regular to a guest star in the upcoming third season—a standard practice for series as characters graduate high school.
“Katie’s off to college, and that’s a different chapter for Amy and Michael, which is appropriate and a good shift,” said Doc executive producer and co-showrunner Hank Steinberg. He indicated that the series might introduce a slight time jump between seasons, noting, “Empty nest is a whole other psychological, emotional challenge for people, especially for Amy, who doesn’t remember all that time.”
Steinberg emphasized that Katie will continue to be part of Doc in her new capacity. “We love the character, and we adore Charlotte, so she will be in the show, but she will not be living at home; she’ll be off in Chicago at school,” he stated. “So she will be in the show as needed.”

Season-Long Series Regular Arcs: Huffman Out, Underwood In
Doc began with Scott Wolf in a season-long recurring role as Amy’s morally ambiguous antagonist, Dr. Richard Miller, during Season 1. This was followed by a year-long deal with Felicity Huffman as Amy’s mentor, Dr. Joan Ridley, in Season 2, and now a one-year deal for Blair Underwood to portray Dr. Ben Grant, a trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, in Season 3.
The introduction of new character arcs raises questions about the show’s direction. “I don’t know if we’re going to do a big name every season, but Felicity was fantastic,” Steinberg remarked. “We had a concept from the beginning that it would be a one-year deal. We always knew that she was going to come in, she was going to be sick and hiding her illness, and by the end, she would die in a heroic fashion, providing a cathartic moment for Amy.”
Initially, the producers were uncertain about the show’s potential success when Season 1 was plotted, leading to Huffman being introduced at the start of Season 2. The series’ impressive reception resulted in a 22-episode Season 2 renewal, allowing the creative team to launch Underwood’s storyline in the Season 2 finale, a decision made prior to the announcement of a 22-episode third season.
“It’s fun bringing in new characters that boost and energize,” Steinberg noted. “Blair’s incredible; he’s so charismatic and brings new energy. We didn’t have a surgeon character to anchor our medical stories, so this addition felt fresh and essential, especially with a character who has a past with Amy.”

Richard May Not Be Gone For Good
Richard’s character arc concluded in Season 1, but due to his popularity, Wolf returned for the second half of Season 2. Faced with serious consequences for his past misdeeds, Richard managed to find a loophole allowing him reinstatement at Westside, despite having covered up a patient’s death.
In a twist of fate, Richard redeemed himself by volunteering for an antiviral treatment that endangered his life. Though weak, he ultimately offered his blood for a serum to save others, culminating in a moment of poetic justice when Nurse Liz (Conni Miu) recovered thanks to his serum donation, leading Richard to quip that they were “now even.”
Despite announcing his departure from Westside, it seems Richard’s story may not be over. Steinberg stated, “We love Scott, we love the character; we will see if there’s a way to bring him back in a way that makes sense. We love him, and the audience loves him.”

Nursing Staff: Exit For Lucy, Liz & Julie Remain Recurring
The Season 2 finale marked a significant moment as Nurse Lucy (Paulyne Wei) became the first Westside staff member to die on screen due to the deadly virus.
Having appeared in 17 episodes since the series premiere, Lucy, along with her colleagues Liz (Miu) and Julie (Claire Armstrong), had been a recurring presence in the show. Liz experienced a notable character arc in the finale, standing up to Richard. This has led to speculation about Miu potentially receiving a promotion to a series regular for Season 3.
Steinberg acknowledged the strength of Liz’s character and the dynamics of the cast. “We love Conni, and we love that character of Liz,” he noted. “How that develops, we’ll see. We have a lot of characters to service in 44 minutes. But over 22 episodes, we aim to flesh out the world more and more.”
He added that Nurse Julie also is getting her moment to shine. “Claire is an incredible actress, and bringing her story to the forefront was incredibly rewarding.”
“The more the show goes on, the more those supporting characters get opportunities to shine and become more dimensional,” Steinberg concluded. “That’s part of the fun of the show, so we will see how things develop.”
