Celebrating the Impact of African Designers on Global Fashion
In recent years, African designers have garnered significant support from international figures such as Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Naomi Campbell. This backing has propelled a rising number of fashion brands from the continent to seek entry into the global market.
Among these trailblazers is South African designer Thebe Magugu, who gained recognition after winning the 2019 LVMH Prize for young designers, an accolade that includes a €300,000 ($315,000) grant. Magugu opened his first fashion house in Johannesburg last year, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Magugu’s designs are known for blending modern aesthetics with elements of Africa’s cultural identity. His ambition is to elevate African fashion on the world stage. “I think the world is really hungry for stories that are outside the European gaze or the American view,” he told CNN. “I think the storytelling we have in Africa is so nuanced … when they see it for the first time, they really respond to it.”
Magugu’s perspective is echoed by Serge Carreira, director of the emerging brands initiative at the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, which oversees the French fashion industry. Carreira has noted a growing global interest in African designers, suggesting a significant shift in the fashion landscape.
