Catch the Thrilling Matchup: Anthony Murphy Faces Striker Pence in Prep Baseball Roundup
Corona Panthers Secure Thrilling 9-7 Victory Behind Future MLB Prospects
In an exciting showcase of talent on Wednesday, the Corona Panthers defeated Corona Santiago, 9-7, featuring standout performances from two potential future Major League Baseball draft picks, Anthony Murphy and Striker Pence.
Pence, who clocked pitches at a remarkable 99 mph, recorded six strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings before leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. However, the momentum shifted when Murphy launched a home run off Pence’s successor, Thomas Padilla, tying the score. Murphy later struck out Pence during the seventh inning, securing a save for his team. Pence also contributed significantly at the plate with two RBI singles.
“Those are two amazing baseball players, and what a treat for them to get after it,” said Corona coach Andy Wise, highlighting the competitive spirit between the two players.
The duo’s history runs deep; they attended middle school together, with Murphy, a senior center fielder, emerging as a likely first-round draft pick. Pence, a sophomore, may consider reclassifying to qualify for the 2027 draft.
Errors played a crucial role in the outcome, as the Panthers committed three, bringing their total to 20 over their last three games. A crucial misplay by Santiago opened the door for a six-run sixth inning by Corona, during which Danny De La Torre delivered a two-run double. The Panthers anticipate improved defensive performance as infielders Joseph Flores and Kobee Finnikin become eligible after the transfer sit-out period concludes.
