Caltrans Workers Work to Safely Rescue Reindeer on the 5 Freeway
Reindeer Encounter Halts Traffic on 5 Freeway
In an unusual incident on Saturday morning, a pair of reindeer were spotted on the 5 Freeway in San Fernando, prompting traffic delays as authorities and Caltrans workers worked to corral the animals.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports around 6:30 a.m. regarding two reindeer walking along the southbound lanes, just before the ramp to the 118 Freeway.
According to CHP officials, at least one of the reindeer was struck by a vehicle, while the other walked away. The owner successfully retrieved the injured animal.
"I thought maybe Santa had lost one of his helpers," remarked Steve Bracamontes, a witness to the scene. Bracamontes observed the reindeer moving towards oncoming traffic, while Caltrans workers followed closely behind to manage the situation.
Video footage captured two Caltrans trucks maneuvering back and forth in an effort to corral the animals. As of now, it remains unclear whether the second deer was located.
