California Man Found Guilty of Murdering His Missing Army Reservist Girlfriend
Jury Convicts Man in Girlfriend’s Murder Case
LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles jury has convicted Luis Antonio Gomes Akay of first-degree murder in connection with the 2022 disappearance of his girlfriend, Anna Laura Costa Porsberg, a U.S. Army reservist whose body has never been found. The verdict was reached in under three hours, relying heavily on circumstantial evidence.
Porsberg traveled from New Jersey to Los Angeles with Akay in December 2022. Following a dispute on December 27, she was reported missing. Surveillance footage showed Akay struggling with a heavy suitcase at their hotel, and GPS data later indicated he was in the Angeles National Forest for an hour.
During the trial, witnesses testified that Akay often claimed, “no body, no crime,” implying he believed he could avoid prosecution.
While extensive searches of the Angeles National Forest were conducted following the GPS leads, the location of Porsberg’s remains remains a mystery. Additionally, Akay has faced scrutiny over a similar case involving a former girlfriend in Brazil, but he has not been charged in that jurisdiction.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman emphasized the challenges of “no body” cases, stating, "For over three years, Anna’s family and friends have waited for justice. I want to thank the investigators who methodically laid out the case piece-by-piece."
Akay is scheduled for sentencing on April 27 at the Airport Courthouse, where he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
