California Faces Lawsuit from Trump Administration Over Vehicle Emission Standards
California Faces Federal Lawsuit Over Vehicle Emission Standards Amid Rising Gas Prices
The Trump administration has intensified its legal confrontation with California over the state’s vehicle-emission standards, filing a lawsuit on Thursday aimed at the state’s air regulators and their efforts to reduce automotive pollution.
President Donald Trump has consistently opposed California’s initiatives to limit tailpipe emissions and promote electric vehicle adoption. This includes a significant move last summer, when he blocked the state’s groundbreaking ban on the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Additionally, he has frequently criticized California’s high gas prices, which are predominantly driven by taxes and stringent environmental regulations.
In a recent statement, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office condemned the lawsuit, emphasizing that it arises during a time of rising gas prices—exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran—while many drivers explore electric vehicle options. “Gas prices are soaring nationwide because of Trump’s reckless choices, and now he’s attacking the Golden State for trying to give Californians more freedom and cheaper options,” remarked Newsom spokesperson Anthony Martinez.
According to the American Automobile Association, Californians faced an average gas price of $5.37 per gallon on Thursday, compared to the national average of $3.60. Prices have surged approximately 56 cents a gallon statewide and 35 cents nationally since the previous week, reflecting an increase of around 20% since military actions involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
“It’s ironic that they’re doing this just at the time when people are most worried about gas prices,” noted Dan Farber, faculty director of the Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment at the University of California, Berkeley’s law school.
Following Trump’s suspension of California’s ambitious electric vehicle mandates last year, the state quickly initiated its own lawsuit in response. The California Air Resources Board subsequently asserted that previously established standards designed to address emissions that threaten climate and public health would remain valid despite the challenges to its more rigorous regulations.
However, the federal lawsuit contends that California lacks the authority to enforce even its less stringent standards. “Oppressive, expensive electric vehicle mandates drive up costs for American consumers and violate federal law,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
California has a long history of seeking approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for stricter emissions standards than those mandated by the federal government. This has enabled other states to adopt California’s regulations. However, during Trump’s first term, the federal government revoked that authority. This was reinstated in 2022 under President Joe Biden’s administration, which also laid out plans to strengthen fuel economy standards established under Biden for new vehicles.
